a self taught Trinidadian artist, began his love of "conveying messages through imagery", by assisting his parents in the design and building of Carnival floats from 1956 to 1960. From then right up to the mid 90s as a UK Bristol University degreed Commercial Artist, Tony has continued his love of designing for Trinidad's main annual fiesta - from individual Mas' designs, to complete bands and Carnival King and Queen portrayals, many of which have enjoyed successes locally, in other Caribbean isles and internationally.
During his tenure of studies to attain his degree in Commercial Art, Anthony was also trained in the art of waxwork at the world renowned Madame Tussauds. This career move seconded him to become a qualified Mortician at the University of Cincinnati in 1974. His experience from Tussauds helped him to be the recipient of the "Ivan Pier Bowsher medal" for excellence in waxwork and cosmetology. This prestigious annual award is only given to one student out of some sixteen mortuary science institutions throughout the State of Ohio.
To those who may wonder at the reasons behind such diverse careers as Commercial Art/Mortuary Science the reasons are:
From premature birth Anthony was a victim of Syndactyly, a rare birth predisposition which caused his fingers to be webbed and shortened. Plastic surgery over the years has
corrected this condition to a large extent.
As a child Tony has been influenced by the works of Michelangelo and da Vinci and other "Old Masters" of the Arts. Hence his obsession with the human body.
His stepfather was the much respected and knighted surgeon "Sir Joseph Henry Pierre" and it was through his influence (and his own aforecited situation), that Anthony became an
Embalmer/Mortician.
Now retired, Anthony is currently utilizing his diverse experiences and talents as a Commissioned Artist. His work includes religious iconography, portraiture of either people or animals, places or buildings of interest, book illustrations and costume designs.
